Rachael: Sony Ericsson announces Xperia X10 Android phone

x10

Sony Ericsson made it all official today, ending the teasing and announcing the Xperia X10, the first of what SE says will be a family of Android OS devices to ship next year. X10 is expected to be available in Q1 of 2010, though no specifics were given as to pricing or availability.

A few hands-on reports have popped up from the SE launch event, and it sounds like the canned demos of the "Rachael" UX (User Experience) are pretty amazing, but the sole X10 prototype shown to media was suffering from severe pre-pre-pre-release performance issues. Engadget went so far as to say that "Calling the present interface 'laggy' would be paying it an unearned compliment." Heh.

That said, SE's got a great history with media-centric devices, and their "Timescape," "Mediascape," and face recognition features sound really nifty. X10 looks less like an Android device and more like a brand new Sony Ericsson device - at least from the demos SE's showing - which is a testament to the power of an open OS upon which developers can build custom user interfaces.

x10b

Sounds like SE's got quite a job on their hands if they're going to ship this thing in a few short months. But I'll echo most all of my peers in saying that if they can get X10 into stores in Q1 of next year, and if the production units look like and act like the press photos and demo videos SE's been getting out to the media, we'll have ourselves one whale of an entertainment-focused Android phones on our hands.

From SE's new Product Launch Blog:

Some quick facts about the X10:

  • Users will be able to download apps from a variety of stores, including Play Now Arena and Android Market.
  • 4.0 inches, 480 x 854 pixels (WVGA), scratch-resistant capacitive screen
  • The processor is the 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon
  • 8.1 megapixel camera
  • Available colors will be Sensuous Black and Luster White
And a whole bunch of specs:

Yup T-mobile USA supports the bands UMTS HSPA 900/1700/2100 according to there website http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/products/mobilephones/specifications/xperiax10?lc=en&cc=gb, even if it comes out in Europe first you can still buy it without Contract and use it in USA either with AT&T and T-Mobile..Hmm is it me or is the Iphone disintegrating little by little, day by day as the March of the DROIDS Arise..!!!

Something is like totally not right. Last time i checked sony's spec sheet it clearly stated UMTS 900,1700,2100 now I checked it says 800,850,1900,2100.
Is it for real? Man! if t-mobile doesn't get this phone i am moving on.

You are Right there appears to be two versions of this website. One which is a US version(=us) and does not sport the t-mobile bands and the other which is the Global website(=gb)and does support T-mobile usa bands. HMMM, I did read somewhere else that they were coming with two versions of the same phone..Lets just Pray that it does sport the t-mobile bands..

After a bit of time with our good friend google, it looks like the X10 will go both ways (oh, the scandal) and will work on TMO 3G and AT&T 3G. All I can say is it's about freak'n time, I'm so over the hype of the iPhone.

Holly balls, why would you need an 8 mega pixel camera in a phone? just because it is a higher resolution does not mean the quality of the picture will be any better. Congrats you can now blow up your cell phone quality picture to a full 8x10 (300dpi) print... It will still look like crap.

SE usually makes phones for GSM carriers so this phone will either come to tmobile or at&t(if SE had a brain they would send it to at&t cuz of better service than tmobile) or they could choose to sell like they did with the X1
